Mail List Management

Engineering/Bowers CIS/Tech Campus ITSG hosts Mailman list servers for CS, ECE, IS, and SDS. Below, find basic instructions on list maintenance.

Browse to department site (permissions required):
- CS – https://list.cs.cornell.edu/
- ECE – https://list.ece.cornell.edu/
- IS – https://list.infosci.cornell.edu/
- SDS – https://list.stat.cornell.edu/
Click the list name to see overview page
At the bottom, click <listname> administrative interface

Click Membership Management, then Mass Subscription
Leave the defaults:
- Subscribe these users or invite them: Subscribe
- Send welcome messages to new subscribees: No
- Send notifications of new subscriptions to the list owner: No
In first text field, enter each address on a new line.
- For a batch, copy/paste or upload a text file from the Choose File button.
- Several formats are acceptable:
  - Email:
    email@address.com
  - Name and email (note the <> around the email):
    FirstName LastName <email@address.com>
Click Submit Your Changes below the second text field.

Important note for nested lists

Use the full address, for example: listname@list.cs.cornell.edu, listname@list.ece.cornell.edu, listname@list.infosci.cornell.edu, listname@list.stat.cornell.edu

A few at a time…
- Click Membership Management, then Membership List
- Check the box in the unsub column next to the address to remove
- Click Submit Your Changes button at the bottom of the list.
Mass removal
- Click Membership Management, then Mass Removal
  - Leave the defaults
    - Send unsubscription acknowledgement to the user: No
    - Send notifications to the list owner: No
  - In the text field, enter each address on a new line.
    - For a batch, copy/paste or upload a text file from the Choose File button.

In browser, go to the administrative page for list, then Privacy Options, then Sender Filters:
To reject messages from outside Cornell and notify the sender…
- In List of non-member addresses whose postings will be automatically rejected, add this:
  - ^[^@]+@(?!cornell\.edu$)
To silently discard messages from outside Cornell without notifying the sender…
- In List of non-member addresses whose postings will be automatically discarded, add this:
  - ^[^@]+@(?!cornell\.edu$)
Click Submit Your Changes at the bottom of the page
